Captains Class

Description

The Great Lakes Charter Training captain's course is comprised of over eighty hours of intense instruction, preparing the student to successfully complete the United States Coast Guard (USCG) examination to operate a vessel for hire. Some examples of vessels for hire include:

Marine Salvage
Towing
Excursion / Cruise ships
Rescue vessels
Fishing Charters
Dive boats
Marine Construction
Vessel Deliveries
Ferrying passengers

The USCG requires the skipper of such a vessel to be licensed if compensation is accepted for vessel operation. Please note these are vessels for hire and are not recreational boats. This license is for commercial purposes only and can generate an excellent income whether used part or full time.

Great Lakes Charter Training provides training for many of the Department of Natural Resource officers, sheriff's marine officers and local police department marine officers as well of the Army Corp. of Engineers. In addition, completion of this course entitles participants to a 10% reduction of marine insurance rates from most companies.

Optional Pre-Class Preparation

The following is a list of things that you can be doing prior to the start of your class with Great Lakes. If you have any questions you may call our office at 1-800-227-8635.

1. Print the application forms from the US Coast Guard's website or call for your application packet. Call (419) 418-6010 and request a 100-ton Masters License application. Turn around time will be about 5 to 7 working days.
2. If applicable, send for your Michigan DNR Charter Boat application packet. (This is if you plan on running a charter boat) Call your regional DNR office and request this. Turn around time will be about 3-5 days.
3. Once your Coast Guard packet arrives, arrange a physical and drug screen using their forms. The physical form must be filled out completely, including vision and hearing tests. Have your physician sign off on everything on the sheet. The drug screen must be done at a certified lab. Most Quest Diagnostics labs are approved. Request an U.S. Government DOT 5 panel quality drug screen.
4. Copy your CPR & First Aid cards and get the copies notarized. If you do not have these, you will need to get them before a license is issued. Also, an original copy (not a photo copy) of your birth certificate (with seal) and an original Social Security Card will be required along with 3 letters of recommendation.
5. Please be aware the Coast Guard requires Sea-time for your application. 365 days on the water in the last 10 yrs.

Starting to collect all this information will reduce the time it takes to obtain your captain’s license, however it is NOT required before class. You have 1-yr from the date you pass the exam to complete your application and forward it to the Coast Guard. Good Luck.
